The year 2018 is only 4 months old and yet, we have had quite a turn of events in the political scene in India. It is much easier to find online political news in India nowadays. This is because of the extent of social media. The scenario in India is mirrored to us in such a way that we at times get confused with the level of communication that is meted to us via social media. We expect politicians to live like voters. We expect them to support the cause for innovation. We want political parties to eliminate inequality. We want them to deploy educational policies. We want political parties to improve our relations with our neighbors.
Despite all the wants that we have, the political bandwagon continues to move forward. The political scenario, for now, is very fluid. Congress, sitting in the opposition want to turn the tables on BJP by next year’s General Elections. The opposition is currently divided into multiple groups which have made the party’s case for a return to power very difficult. BJP has grown well. Identifying potential leaders in their party and progressing forward.
The release of the Budget 2018 led many to believe that this was probably one of the best budgets in recent times. There were certain shortcomings but no policy comes perfect. The opposition can only try to find loopholes in the current government, but a number of corruption scandals of their own have derailed their choices. BJP has introduced some wonderful programs. The Digital India and Cashless India campaigns were good initiatives. There was a blip in the demonetization drive more than a year ago, but that was essential in curbing the spread of black money in India.
The foreign policy that is initiated by the current government is one of the best. The same wasn’t the same during the previous regime. Although the PM is accused of traveling abroad a lot, he actually has strengthened India’s relations with other countries. Also, the popularity of the current PM has remained the same before being elected and after being elected as well. There are surveys still showing his popularity between 62 and 80 percent. He continues to win his state elections. The current regime sees BJP rule 14 states in India. That has been the extent of BJP’s reach. Congress, of course, will need to learn from this and instill local, young leaders across their constituencies. With patience only, can Congress get back to power at next year’s election?
Congress does look agitated and sometimes deflated with BJP’s sheer dominance in elections. There are very slim chances for the opposition to win in 2019. There are ways by which Congress can improve and get back to BJP, but all this will depend on proper administration in their current constituencies and lack of corruption by them as well. The BJP government has started well and currently is far away from corruption or chances of corruption.
Congress has lost most of the states it competed in. In fact, they were annihilated in places where they were usually sure to win. In Karnataka, BJP could not get a win yet, but they are making it hard for the local parties such as TMC and BJD. In Kerala, where the communists have ruled the roast, BJP is steadily finding their ground. BJP has been patient. They have earned the trust of their current states, and are desperate for improvement once they win again in 2019. BJP is almost becoming a pan India party, similar to Congress once was.
2018 also sees the rise of nationalist forces. There is unity seen between non-nationalist parties. There have been cries of coming together between Christians and Muslims. This is because they feel that BJP is a communal party. Religions which were true to the stance on non-violence are coming together. There have been quite some positives in 2018. The reunification of the Indian subcontinent has taken a big step. Decisions are taken much faster nowadays, with regards to Indo-Pakistan decisions.
Some shortcomings in the current government have been witnessed such as the growing rape-related cases and their delayed judgments. Ideologies such as communism, secularism, liberalism, socialism, separatism, and jamuriyat need to stop being circulated and put an end to. The idea is to connect to the large masses.
